Cuban President Fidel Castro sends message of condolences to the Palestinian people

Fidel sign HAVANA (11 November 2004) RHC-- Cuban President Fidel Castro has sent a message of condolences to the Palestinian people and the family of Yasser Arafat upon learning of the death of the president of the Palestinian National Authority.

The leader of the Cuban Revolution said that Yasser Arafat was a close friend and an example of the tireless fight for freedom and independence. Fidel Castro pointed out that the death of Yasser Arafat constitutes a major loss in the struggle of the Palestinian people as well as a hard blow to the international progressive movement.

In his message of condolences to the Palestinian people, the Cuban leader reiterated the island's solidarity and firm support of their cause and Cuba's conviction that the Palestinian people will overcome all obstacles and achieve their goals.

On Thursday, the Cuban Council of State decreed an official mourning period of three days and announced that a book of condolences will be open to the public at the Palestinian Embassy in Havana.
